 About Dhanteras

The term Dhanteras is a combination of two words ‘Dhan’ and ‘Teras’ where Dhan connotes wealth while teras connotes the thirteenth day. Hence it is celebrated on the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha of Kartik month of the Lunar calendar. It marks the initiation of five days of the Diwali festival; it is usually observed one or two days before Diwali. On this day people worship Goddess Laxmi, Lord Dhanwantri, and Lord Kubera. Dhanteras gives the initiation for the Diwali vibes and sets the celebratory mood for it. Performing Dhanteras puja offers the surest way to invite prosperity into the home.

History and significance

All five days of Diwali including Dhanteras are about worshipping Goddess Laxmi and praying for prosperity. Buying precious metals like Gold. People also purchase utensils of steel, brass, or copper. It is believed that buying such things will bring good luck and will eliminate the negativity for the entire year. It is a belief that Goddess Laxmi and Lord Dhanvantri (God of Ayurveda) emerged from Samudra Manthan (churning of milk ocean) on the Dhanteras.

According to the legend, there was a king named Hima, the foreseer told him that his 16 years son would die of a snake bite just after four days of his marriage. His daughter-in-law played a trick, on the fourth day of his marriage, she placed the pile of ornaments at the entrance of her room and narrated stories to her husband to keep him awake the whole night.

Lord Yama came in the guise of the snake but he got dazzled due to the jewellery and sat on the pile of jewellery to listen to the story narrated by the new bride. Meanwhile, he missed the chance to kill the prince at the set time and blessed him the life. Thus, the precious metal has been linked to Goodluck and success.
