Onam

by Megha Budhia

Onam is the first month of the Malayalam calendar, which is referred to as Chingam. The festival celebrates the advent of Vishnu's Vamana avatar and the legendary King Mahabali's subsequent return home. Onam celebrations begin on Atham day (the day when the Atham Nakshatra is in effect) and last for ten days, ending on Thiruvonam day, the most auspicious day of the festival.
