Govardhan Puja

by Megha Budhia

Lord Krishna's victory over God Indra is honoured on this day. Govardhan Puja is associated with Lord Krishna lifting the 'Govardhan Hill' on his finger to protect people who sought refuge from Indra's pouring anger, according to the Bhagavata Purana.

It is known as Bali Pratipada or Bali Padva in Maharashtra. The day commemorates Vamana's triumph over King Bali, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, and Bali's subsequent exile to Patal Lok. On this day, Asura King Bali is said to visit the Prithvi Lok from the Patala Lok, thanks to a boon granted by Lord Vamana.
